Nothing causes Kevin Slater to quake in his boots quite like the tiny, five-foot, Norwegian powerhouse he calls Ma, except for maybe his wife. She's only half her son's size, but she has excellent hearing and a mean poke that she doesn't mind doling out to his ribs whenever he gets sassy. She's a God-fearing woman and the backbone of her growing clan of four children and eight grandchildren.

She still lives on the northern Minnesota farm where she and deceased husband, Charles, raised their brook. She makes a mean batch of lingonberry preserves and her Fyrstkake with cloud cream is downright sinful, but the farm is lonely now. Her only son, and the one who loves her Fyrstkake most, lives down south in North Carolina with wife, Jess, and sons, Zakk and Brandon, and her youngest and only unmarried daughter, Samantha, is seriously considering a move to the area. Eldest daughters, Kate and Kinsey, have been with their own families in Wisconsin for many years, leaving Terese with only elderly Grandma Slater to care for now.

Kevin would like nothing more than to have his Ma closer. And Jess, having grown up with only Dean, would love for her sons and any other children that she and Kevin have to be surrounded by the large family that she only dreamed of as a little girl. Will Terese finally pack up Grandma and leave the farm that's been in the Slater family for generation for a warmer climate?
