The youngest of four, Samantha Kirsten Slater is the wise-cracking, little sister of Burlington's top detective, Kevin Slater. Raised on a farm in Littlefork, Minnesota, Sam grew into quite the tomboy. She played in the corn fields, swam in the creek, and played football with the boys. But her favorite thing to do was to go fishing with big brother, Kevin. Like many big brothers, Kevin tormented Sam from time to time. He pulled her pigtails and made up silly pet names that she hated. To her chagrin, he still calls her Runt. At one point, 11-year old Kevin had his 4-year old sibling convinced that their folks only kept her because they had to, that they didn't want a third girl child.

Then they grew up. And they're now closer than ever.

While Sam was in high school, Kevin went away to join the Army as an airborne MP. She missed him terribly, which was why six years later, having left the military to continue his police career in Minneapolis, she didn't fight him when he insisted that she live with him instead of in a dorm after being accepted at the University of Minnesota. Tomboy Sam had grown up into a beautiful, young woman, and Kevin knew what happened on college campuses. As the protective, older brother, he wasn't letting his Runt out of his sight if he could help it.

The next four years passed in a blur. Sam graduated and, following in her big brother's footsteps, so-to-speak, moved on to law school. She wanted to pursue a career as a prosecutor. At about the same time, the Slater kids lost their dad, and a short while later, their beloved grandfather. Heartbroken over the double loss, Kevin left Minnesota for North Carolina while Sam went to work as an ADA (Assistant District Attorney) in Minneapolis.

She currently lives just across the St. Croix river where she owns a small house in Hudson, Wisconsin. But having traveled to the Tarheel State several times in the past two years, first to meet her future sister-in-law, Jess Mitchell, and later, to stand in as best woman in her brother's wedding, She love North Carolina so much that she's seriously considering a move down south. She has a number of reasons to do so, though she hasn't told her family yet. She's even taken and passed the North Carolina Bar Exam.

Her favorite (and only) big brother is there with his lovely wife, who Sam loves like another sister. She made another girlfriend there, Jess' best friend, Niki Shannon, who gets along famously with everyone in the Slater family. She has two beautiful nephews, her brother's twin sons, Zakk and Brandon. She's at a point in her career where she's ready to make the leap from ambitious, overworked ADA in cold Minneapolis to successful prosecutor in a moderately-busy office in a warmer, and much smaller southern city.

And if that weren't enough...she met a terrific man at Kevin's wedding...one of Jess' colleagues...the single and amazingly attractive Warren County DA, Josh Kelly, who she's kept in contact with regularly and who thinks she's the bees knees. Sam is hot and single, though that may not last for long if Josh has anything to say about it, but he could have some healthy competition in store. Sam's looks could be compared to sister-in-law, Jess. With her flowing blonde hair, fair complexion, and take-charge attitude, like Jess, she just might need the ultimate hero to keep her admirers at bay.

Will she make the move? Maybe, but only time will tell. And if she does, what man will win her heart? There are several who wouldn't mind having the chance. Who might it be?

Josh Kelly - Warren County DA and frontrunner for the position.
David Rafferty - One of Kevin Slater's men and the self-proclaimed stud currently dating Jess Mitchell's best friend Niki Shannon, but currently a reservist on a tour in Iraq. Who knows what might change upon his return to the states.
Brian McCaskell - Another of Kevin's men, sweet little Moon Eyes as Niki calls him, a bit young, but sweet, attractive, and so-far unattached.
Then there's Nick Yarboro, the older and darkly handsome Dom (and suspected serial killer) who claims he's not interested in being tied down, though he does have a keen fascination for a certain buxom, blonde forensic psychologist who just happens to look a lot like Sam. Big brother, Kevin would hit the roof.
