Carl Barnes is a jokester who comes across as abrassive until one gets to know him, much like his famous doppelgänger (according to Jess), Danny Devito. He has a habit of referring to his favorite agent (Jess Mitchell) by a number of, what some might call sexist, pet names...Doll, Sweetheart, and Lulu to name a few...to which she usually reacts much like a petulant teenager, by cursing, stomping, or rolling her eyes, though she's secretly relishes his parental jesting.

But aside from it all, he's a top-notch SAIC with the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation, who heads up the division where Jess works. He genuinely cares for people, expecially his agents, Jess in particular. She more than just another employee to him. She's like a daughter. And he'll do whatever is necessary to see that she gets through every case safe and sound, and STILL puts the bad guys (or gals, as the case may be) behind bars.
